  What is Conservative Populism?

Conservative Populism is a philosophy of individual achievement that combines the powerful and inherently conservative ideas of respect for individual liberty and responsibility with the populist energy of each person working for their own interest.  When free people can work for their own interests without fear or prejudice, we believe they can achieve greatness, and it is with this hope we put forth this philosophy.

A Conservative is Not Always a Republican
Tom Kawczynski - October 5, 2008

Whenever I tell anyone that I am a conservative, it is quite often the case that the first assumption they make is that I must support every policy of the Republican Party.  While true that I am a Republican, it is equally true that there are times when I vehemently disagree with the GOP, and the reason is because being a conservative is different from being a Republican.

Conservatism is a philosophy that, broadly stated, has respect for the traditions of our society, cherishes individual liberty, and expected individual responsibility.  The Republican Party, by contrast, is a political institution that sometimes adheres to these values, but other times does not.  There are many conservatives who choose to remain apart from any party affiliation for precisely this reason.

It is an unfortunate truth that when you tell people that you are a conservative, or even more provocatively, that you are a Republican, that you will be called to answer for every deed of the Bush Administration.  Admitting there are strengths and weaknesses just like any Presidency, there should be no hesitation for a principled conservative to criticize where our elected officials fail to live up to our expectations.

Generally speaking, the Republican Party does well when it adheres to conservative principles such as smaller government, reduced spending, lower taxation, and respecting individual liberty.  Their years in power served to corrupt the Republican Congress which is why conservatives turned away, disillusioned, and rightly rebuked their leaders for abandoning their principles on the Potomac.

One of the commonly accepted political truths is that Democrats came to power because people were tired of conservatism, as expressed by the Republican Party.  This is simply false; a better explanation is that the reason why Democrats were successful is that conservatives, seeing no one representing their interests, simply stayed home.  Much more so than their counterparts, conservatives will not support policies that run counter to their expectations, and therefore the Grand Old Party has suffered.

I am a Republican, but one frustrated with my party at many times.  Most conservatives that I know feel the same way, but we must work to change things, remembering our beliefs, and asking that our elected officials do the same.  For now, I am just a conservative, hoping for someone to speak to my views
